The European Union (EU) and its member states have developed into a multi-layered form of political organisation with a common system of law and values. In addition to the European level and the national level of the EU member states, this multi-level system also includes the regional level, i.e. in Germany, the federal states.

Decisions made by the EU often affect Brandenburg directly: many of the laws passed by the Landtag Brandenburg are either based on or implement European legal requirements. The Landtag Brandenburg therefore has an interest in participating actively in the European discourse. Of particular importance to Brandenburg, for example, are EU agricultural policy or support measures within the scope of EU regional/cohesion policy.

It is naturally the case that regarding Europe, the specialised committee responsible for European affairs is of considerable importance in the Landtag Brandenburg. In this respect, recommendations for decisions on EU affairs are also generally submitted by the European Committee. In terms of their content, however, European matters often relate specifically to the topic areas of one or more of the specialised committees. Projects associated with the European Union can therefore be addressed within all areas of policy, and recommendations can be made to the Landtag for the determination of positions.

The Landtag Brandenburg is represented in Brussels with a State Parliament Office.
